Art Deco stands for Art Decoratifs
The style first appeared in France around mid-to-late 1910s and matured during the 1920s.
It became popular in the U.S. and Europe during the 1930s.

Art Deco was originally known as ‘le style moderne’ or‘Jazz Moderne'.
It wasn’t named ‘Art Deco’ until 1968 – four decades after it first appeared.
It was then retroactively named after the 1925 Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes.
Art Deco focuses on striking geometric shapes and patterns – think curves, bold shapes, and zigzags – combined with strong colours and luxury materials (shiny metals).
In contrast to Art Nouveau, which it followed (which was playful and decorative), Art Deco is sleeker and more streamlined.
Art Deco design spans art, fonts, textiles, furniture design, jewellery, clothing, vehicles, buildings, and more.
The Chrysler Building in New York is a famous Art Deco building. There are also Art Deco touches in the stations, arches and tunnels of the London Underground, as well as in buildings around the world.
