The interior décor trend right now is all about mixing vintage finds and retro patterns with modern furniture.

It’s a simple way to give any room or space a timeless, cosy vibe without making it feel overdone. Plus, it’s versatile—easy to change whenever your style evolves.

When the weather’s rubbish outside, there’s nothing better than curling up with an enjoyable book, so let’s start by creating our own charming vintage reading nook.

The first thing to realise is that your reading haven doesn’t have to be an entire room; it could be an alcove, a corner of the living room, or that area on the landing you don’t know what to do with.

Size, as they like to tell us, doesn’t matter. Wink wink.

Ambience does.

So, here’s how to create your own relaxing timeless reading space in 5 easy steps…

How to create A RELAXING RETRO READING VIBE

Step 1:

Picture a cosy corner reading nook that feels like a warm hug after a long day. It starts with a soft armchair, upholstered in a vintage-inspired fabric like tweed, velvet, or a floral print. A striking throw blanket is draped over one arm, inviting you to curl up…

Don't you want that?!

How to Get It...

We’re all about affordable vintage here at Toteally Vintage, so while it’s great if your armchair or loveseat already has the right vintage feel, buying a new one or re-upholstering is unnecessary.

A vintage-style blanket is wrapped up and on the floor against a wooden floor

Adorn it with a retro throw blanket instead (or as well as!).

Wrap up nice and cosy with a soft, woven throw with classic or vintage patterns like plaid or herringbone.

Or opt for a statement piece like my castlecore throw blanket with vintage Moyen Age print, draped over the chair or the arm of a loveseat. (Pictured, right)

Step 2:

Nearby, a small wooden side table holds a steaming cup of tea, resting on an antique-style coaster...

How to Pull It Off:

You don't need an antique side table to recreate the vintage vibe. Retro and vintage-inspired drink coasters will grab the eye instead. They're an easy way to bring a nostalgic vibe to your space and tie your look together.

Whether you’re into William Morris-inspired patterns, Art Deco elegance, or cosy cottagecore, there’s something for every style. Just pick the vibe you’re going for and shop accordingly—vintage-style coasters are super easy to find.

Why, I have a few styles available myself, thank you for asking! Here they are, all sets of 4, available from my Etsy shop (please click on the photograph for the direct link).

Step 3:

A vintage lamp with a soft, warm glow sits on the table or hangs overhead, creating the perfect light for reading...

How to Bring the Vision to Life:

Feature an Old-School Lamp: Illuminate your nook with a lamp that has a stained-glass shade, brass base, or other vintage detailing.

You don't need to buy a whole new lamp either, just replace the shade. There are some beautiful William Morris shades around, for example.

Failing that, opt for vintage-inspired candle holders - they may not offer enough light to read by, but they'll create a lovely ambience,

Step 4:

Plush cushions in retro patterns—think paisley, herringbone, or muted florals—make the chair extra comfortable...

How to Make it Happen:

Add cushions with floral, paisley, or geometric prints reminiscent of the 60s or 70s for both comfort and style.

Quality reproductions may be more affordable than originals.

You could also opt for stunning one-of-a-kind designs from famous artists, turning your cushions into statement pieces.

Step 5:

A vintage bookmark lies on an open page of a book

The walls are lined with bookshelves filled with well-loved classics, with a few decorative items like a retro clock, a ceramic vase, or framed art to complete the look...

How to Tie it All Together:

Decorate with Vintage Accessories: Complete the look with a small bookshelf filled with classics, a rotary phone, or an antique photo frame to tie the space together.

Add a small rug to anchor the space, and a houseplant or two to add a fresh, lively touch.

Voilà

This nook is more than a spot to read; it’s a cosy retreat for quiet moments of relaxation.
